In celebration of the Bank’s 85th Anniversary as well as its 10th Anniversary of the acquisition by China Merchants Bank in 2018, the Bank title-sponsored The Big Meal which was translated, produced, and played by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (“HKRep”)*. “The blink-and-it's-gone nature of life should encourage us to value its preciousness while it lasts.” is the core message the Bank would like to share with our customers at the exclusive performance on 20th May 2018 at 5:20pm, which the Bank deliberately selected as “520” is the abbreviation for “I Love You” in Chinese. We hoped our audiences could “taste” the love, trials, and overall resilience of families brought by The Big Meal, and would treasure every moment spent with their loved ones.

The Big Meal, written by Dan LeFranc, was lauded as Best Play of the Year by the Chicago Tribune before receiving its Off-Broadway premiere in 2012 and nominated as Outstanding Play at the Drama Desk Awards. The Chinese version of The Big Meal was performed at Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre and Shanghai Grand Theatre in July 2016, and made a triumphant return in March 2018. It was The Big Meal’s debut in Hong Kong.

*Established in 1977, and incorporated in 2001, the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre is the longest standing and largest professional theatre company in Hong Kong.
